What is Reiki? All That You Wanted to Know

We are bringing in the details of Reiki in this post. We will learn what is Reiki in the first place. Reiki is a spiritual healing art of Japanese origin. The word Reiki is made up of 2 Japanese words ie. (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. We will be telling you details of all you wanted to know about Reiki sessions here with.

All You Wanted to Know about Reiki

Now, let us update you on what does it include, how it is conducted, what is Reiki’s gain and why you should take one.

Who can give you Reiki

This purely depends on you. You may take the time to find and choose a practitioner (professional or friend) with whom you feel comfortable. Your friend might be new to healing but since you share a bond with them you become more comfortable and receptive to healing. If you find a practitioner then you must also check that they are genuine and at least level 1 master.

What is Reiki Therapy Ambiance

Reiki

Like I described, a quiet place is required for Reiki where you are not disturbed. Professional healers have a dedicated space for their own or they arrange for one when they do the healing process. They frequently play soft music during the session as a way of concealing ambient noise, but let them know if you prefer silence. Typically, 1 session is of 30 minutes on an average but for some patients, it is carried in hospitals who may have a shorter session (15 or 20 minutes), while some personal healers give 90-minute sessions.

Is there any Intake with Reiki

Some healers will ask you to fill an intake form and/or conduct a health interview, describing details of general healthcare or manual therapies, such as massage. They will explain you the process, and ask if you have any specific needs. Do not hesitate to tell them if you have a health condition that does not allow you to lie down straight or front or if you have any sensitive areas that should not be touched. In hospitals, they generally have to take permission to touch the patient to carry out Reiki healing.

What will happen in Reiki session

The person should be fully clothed lying on a treatment table or be sitting comfortably supported in a chair to carry out this healing procedure.

Reiki is offered through a light touch with the practitioner’s hands placed on different chakra points from head to torso. The placement of the hands should never be intrusive or inappropriate, nor should there be any pressure.

The practitioner can also perform the healing on the limbs can be as needed especially for patients with surgery to heal it. They may also hold their hands just off the body if there is an open wound or burn.

What can be your experience

People often experience heat in the Reiki healer’s hands, but sometimes it may be cool as well. Some people also feel subtle pulsations when the practitioner will place their hands on the patient and then they immediately feel that pulsation going inside their whole body as a spark. Soon after they experience this, the body relaxes and calms down. People also claim that this is a wonderful calming experience for them.

During the healing process, some people fall into a deep sleep like meditative state. Sometimes the experience of Reiki is dramatic, while for other people, the first session, in particular, may be uneventful, although they feel somehow better afterward. The most common experience is an almost immediate release of stress and a feeling of deep relaxation.

Some do’s & don’t for the session

Now that you know what is Reiki, we will guide you about cautions while the Reiki therapy is started.

Do’s

  • Ask your practitioner about your music preferences – soft or no music etc.
  • Use the restroom before your session so that you are able to lie down comfortably.
  • If you have any shyness about being touched, ask them to show you the hand placements before starting so you are very clear what to expect.
  • Let them know your needs before you start.
  • If you have trouble breathing and lying flat is uncomfortable, tell them so that they can be careful or mention if you have had surgery recently and don’t want to be touched where the scar is still tender (the practitioner can float their hand here).
  • If you are pregnant or have digestive complaints, it may not be feasible to lie on your stomach. Inform your practitioner in advance.

Don’t

  • If you become uncomfortable, you can adjust your position at any time but do not interrupt your practitioner.
  • Do not move your body while receiving Reiki until and unless you are asked to as does not give results.
  • Do not eat anything during the session.

What happens after the session

If you expect a diagnosis then this is not what Reiki does. You might be asked to follow a regime like drinking more water or eating light food by your practitioner as a part of Reiki treatment. Although people typically leave a Reiki session feeling refreshed, sometimes they may also feel more tired in the evening than usual. This is because everyone has a different body healing clock, some people may feel instant relief and calmness and this is what is Reiki meant for. Whereas others may feel exhausted and need to sleep to get the relief and effect of Reiki. This is not viewed as an adverse reaction, but rather as the body’s natural healing response to this treatment. People commonly report a sense of calm and mental clarity and sleeping well after Reiki.

How many sessions should you receive

Your practitioner or healer may suggest a series of sessions. At least four to five sessions is a traditional recommendation and he also gives you time to evaluate what is Reiki’s benefit you are receiving. You can discuss with them about how frequent you want to take the sessions for best results.

If you have any serious health challenge, Reiki practitioners often recommend four sessions over four consecutive days. These need not be given by the same practitioner. The 4 sessions have to be regular if you want to see best results.

Receiving Reiki is a wonderfully passive experience. Don’t try to relax, just let the Reiki relax you. Your state will shift quite naturally as the session proceeds. Meanwhile feel free to daydream, enjoy the music, or simply observe your breath or the sensations of the therapy.

By continuous Reiki healing sessions, once feels relieved of their tensions, disappointments, pain – inner and outer, worries and be in a more relaxing state. This improves their state of mind and consciousness thereby increasing their productivity and self-awareness.
